Sunflowers, native to the Americas, in all their colorful and cheerful glory, are a happy sight to behold.
Beside their stunning beauty, these multipurpose plants deliver yummy snacks, healthy oil and birdseeds.
Cultivated in North America as far back as 3000 BCE, sunflowers were developed for food, medicine, dye, and oil. Then, they were exported to the rest of the world by Spanish conquistadors around 1500. Tsar Peter the Great was so fascinated by the sunny flowers he saw in the Netherlands that he took some back to Russia. By the 19th century, the country was planting two million acres of sunflowers every year. Today Russia is the 2nd. largest sunflower producing country in the world only after Ukraine. European Union, Argentina and Turkey also amond the top sunflower growing countires in the world.
Interesting thing is: Russian immigrants to the United States in the 19th century brought back highly developed sunflower seeds that grew bigger blooms, and sparked a renewed interest in the native American plant. American sunflower production exploded. In 2012, U.S. astronaut Don Pettit brought along sunflower seeds to the International Space Station.
Sunflower's popularity stands the test of time.
The sunflower’s name comes from its tendency to reposition itself to face the sun. Sunflowers track the sun as they need a lot of sunlight. The flower buds and young blossoms will face east in the morning, follow the sun as the earth moves during the day. But as the flowers get heavier during seed production, the stems will stiffen and the mature flower heads will generally remain facing east.
Sunflowers have been considered to have healing power. Growing sunflowers for food and medicine has a rich tradition with Native Americans, who used these native seeds in everything from flour-based cakes to cooking oil. These days, Americans still have a love affair with sunflower seeds as a rich source of protein, vitamins and amino acids, and an easy way to choose a healthy snack. Sunflowers are an almost universal symbol of hope, healing and joy. Their bright heads track the sun in gardens across the nation, but they’re more than just a pretty face. They’re also a productive oil, food and florists’ crop and can help build your soil in many ways – ways that we’re only just beginning to understand. Sunflowers symbolize adoration, loyalty and longevity. Sunflowers are known for being “happy” flowers, making them the perfect gift to bring joy to our days. In China, people associate sunflowers with a long life, good fortune, and vitality. To Native American groups, sunflowers represented harvest, bounty, and provision because they provided seeds, pigment, and more.
